Formation Head Spa Holistique Présentiel

Do you need Head Spa training to open your own salon?

This is one of the first questions professionals ask when considering integrating head spa into their business. And it's a good question—because the answer isn't as simple as a yes or no.

In France, the legal framework for head spa is still being structured. To date, there is no state diploma specifically for head spa. Depending on your activity—hairdressing, aesthetics, or wellness—certain practices are governed by distinct regulations. But "technically possible" is not the right criterion for making this decision.

This guide gives you the full picture: what the law says about head spa training, what the reality on the ground is, and what your future clients say.

What the legal framework in France says

Head spa relies on two types of professional gestures: hair care and scalp massage. These two activities fall under distinct regulations depending on the status of your establishment.

In a hair salon, the activity is regulated: the establishment must be under the effective and permanent control of a professionally qualified person (diploma or experience according to current conditions). Head spa can be integrated into your offering as long as it remains within the scope of wellness and non-medical care. This implies an absolute rule for your communication: no therapeutic, anti-hair loss, or curative claims in your menus, general terms and conditions, product sheets, or social networks.

In a beauty salon or independent wellness center, the framework is different. Massages for aesthetic or wellness purposes are practiced in these establishments, but the line with therapeutic massage must be clearly respected—both in the gestures and in the wording. Legal risk arises precisely when a treatment is presented as therapeutic or medical. If in doubt about your communication, have it validated by your professional liability insurance or legal counsel before disseminating it.

In both cases: the absence of dedicated head spa training is not sanctioned under a "missing diploma." However, you must remain within the scope of your declared activity, respect hygiene and safety rules, and avoid any therapeutic or medical claims. And beyond the legal aspect, the absence of head spa training exposes you to something much more costly.

Our position at Sakura Head Spa: we do not provide training directly. Our role is to equip you and guide you towards the best certified organizations. For head spa training, we partner with Kiara Hair Spa, a Qualiopi-certified organization.

What the reality on the ground says

Professionals who have tried to offer a head spa without training all report the same thing: the first sessions are hesitant, the gestures imprecise, and clients feel it. Head spa is a precise sensory ritual—the pressure, the rhythm, the sequence of movements cannot be improvised in front of a client who has paid for a premium experience.

More concretely, here's what the absence of head spa training can cost in practice:

Situation Without training With certified training
Quality of gestures Approximate, not very reproducible Mastered protocol, consistent results
Pricing Difficult to justify beyond €60 Premium service justifiable at €80–120
Client trust Weakened without legitimacy argument Strengthened by certificate and expert discourse
Management of contraindications Risk of error on sensitive scalp Adapted protocol based on initial diagnosis
Professional liability insurance coverage Potentially refused in case of incident Proof of competence recognized by insurer
Access to funding None OPCO, FAFCEA, France Travail if Qualiopi
Professional communication Limited to "I offer head spa" Certified, referencable, valuable on social media

The real question isn't just legal—it's also commercial

Your clients don't ask for your diploma before lying down. But they judge you from the first few minutes on the quality of what they experience. And in a head spa market that is still structuring, professionals who have undergone serious Japanese head spa training gain a lead that others will find difficult to catch up with.

Hair spa or head spa training is not a legal entry ticket. It's a commercial differentiation lever. It's what allows you to charge €90 rather than €50 for a session, to build loyalty rather than just attract, and to build a reputation rather than suffer one.

It also secures your professional liability insurance. In the event of an incident—a reaction to a product, cervical pain, discomfort on a sensitive scalp—an insurer may refuse to cover you if you do not have any recognized proof of technical competence. A certified head spa training is that proof.

The three profiles who hesitate to train—and our answers to them

"I've been a hairdresser for 15 years, I have the basics"

Hairdressing basics give you a real understanding of the scalp and a sense of touch that many do not have. But head spa training is a specific protocol—the massage sequences, steam management, accessory use, initial diagnosis—all of this must be learned. Your experience accelerates the training, it doesn't replace it.

"I don't have the budget to train now"

This is often the argument that hides another hesitation. Let's start with the CPF—it's systematically the first question. The answer is clear: almost all head spa training courses are not eligible for CPF. To be eligible, the training must lead to a certification registered with the RNCP or the specific directory, and the organization must be accredited accordingly. This is not the case for most head spa training courses today—beware of any organization that tells you otherwise without showing you the certification sheet on moncompteformation.gouv.fr.

The real funding levers are elsewhere. If your head spa training is Qualiopi certified, it can be fully or partially funded via your OPCO if you are an employee, your FAFCEA if you are self-employed or an artisan, or France Travail if you are retraining. Note: FAFCEA is strengthening its Qualiopi requirements from July 1, 2026—if you are considering this path, it is better not to wait. The head spa training budget can be zero depending on your situation.

"I'll invest in equipment first, training will come later"

This is the opposite logic of what professionals who have successfully launched their head spa recommend. Professional head spa equipment is an investment that quickly pays for itself—but only if you know how to use it expertly. An unused or misused head spa basin costs money; it doesn't generate it.

The logical sequence: train first, then equip with the right criteria derived from the training, then launch with confidence.

How to choose your head spa training: non-negotiable criteria

If you have decided to train—and we think that's the right decision—here are the three criteria never to sacrifice in your search for head spa training.

Qualiopi certification. This is the national label that guarantees the pedagogical quality of the organization and conditions access to public and pooled funding (OPCO, FAFCEA, France Travail, Regions). Without Qualiopi, none of these funding options are accessible. Always check the validity of the certification on travail-emploi.gouv.fr before committing.

Supervised practice. Serious Japanese head spa training is not done online only. Massage techniques, pressure management, and adapting to scalp reactions are learned in person with real-time corrections. A minimum of two days of supervised practice.

Field experience of trainers. Explicitly ask how long the trainer has been practicing, if they still work in a salon, and if they were trained in Japan or by Japanese practitioners. These are questions that serious organizations welcome without hesitation.

EXPRESS FAQ

Is head spa training mandatory in France?

To date, there is no specific state diploma for head spa. The absence of dedicated head spa training is not sanctioned as such—but you must remain within the scope of your declared activity, respect hygiene rules, and avoid any therapeutic or medical claims in your communication.

Can you open a head spa without a diploma?

There is no mandatory "head spa" state diploma. However, without certified head spa training, you cannot access public funding, you struggle to justify premium pricing, and your professional liability insurance may refuse to cover you in case of an incident due to lack of recognized proof of competence.

Which head spa training should you choose to open your salon?

A Qualiopi-certified head spa training, with a minimum of 2 days of in-person practice and trainers with real field experience. At Sakura Head Spa, we guide towards Kiara Hair Spa, our Qualiopi-certified partner specializing in Japanese head spa training. Discover certified training courses.

How to finance head spa training?

Via your OPCO (employee), your FAFCEA (self-employed or artisan—which strengthens its Qualiopi requirements from July 1, 2026), or France Travail (retraining). For CPF: the training must lead to a certification registered with the RNCP or the specific directory, and the organization must be accredited. Most head spa training courses do not fall into this category—check on moncompteformation.gouv.fr before relying on it.

Can you get head spa training online?

Theoretical modules yes. But Japanese massage techniques require supervised in-person practice—touch cannot be learned in front of a screen. Beware of 100% online training courses on this subject.

What is the difference between head spa training and hair spa training?

Head spa refers to the complete Japanese ritual integrating massage, steam, and treatments. Hair spa is a more generic term covering hair care without necessarily the in-depth massage dimension. Japanese head spa training courses are generally more specialized.
